Computer Science Pathway

JAVA coding languages are becoming the core competency of the 21st century workforce and rapidly becoming the language of the applied sciences,  scientific simulations, and data analysis. In this Computer Science Pathway students use these coding languages, personal creativity and design processes to solve real world problems.

This advanced coding class provides Nicolas students the opportunity to further develop their skills in Java and Android Studios App Development.  Students will continue to focus on solving real world problems by leveraging personal creativity and innovation.  Students will take the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam and participate in the Congressional APP Challenge.

Nicolas Coding students participated in the 2017 Congressional App Challenge, a nationwide event in which students design and code a smartphone app. This year 138 teams from 17 schools competed from the 39th Congressional District. A team of Nicolas Junior High's coding students, who created the app "CORE",  won 2nd place overall. A second team of Nicolas Junior High's coding students, who created the app "Friend.Me." won 1st place in the Middle School Division. All students are current members of the Advanced Applied Coding course offered at Nicolas. All competitive apps from the Congressional App Challenge can be viewed in the side panel.
