Our School Story
Mission & Vision Statement
Knights on the Pathway of Innovation
At Nicolas Junior High School, our story is defined not only by innovation; but by reliability. We believe students thrive when systems are clear, adults are aligned, and learning environments are intentionally designed. To ensure this, Nicolas has anchored its growth and decision-making in the High Reliability Schools (HRS) Framework, using it as our compass for continuous improvement.
Serving 7th and 8th grade students in a richly diverse community, Nicolas is committed to creating a school where every student feels safe, supported, and challenged, and where effective teaching happens in every classroom, every day.
Academic Characteristics
A High Reliability Approach to Teaching and Learning
Nicolas Junior High School is a comprehensive STEM-focused junior high that has intentionally transformed its academic program through the High Reliability Schools Framework, beginning with HRS Level 1 (Safe, Supportive, and Collaborative Culture) and HRS Level 2 (Effective Teaching in Every Classroom).
What Makes Our Academic Program Distinct
A Guaranteed Foundation for Learning
- Clear Elements of Success (EOS) serve as non-negotiables for instruction and environment, ensuring consistency across classrooms.
- Students experience predictable routines, posted learning goals, and positive greetings that create readiness for learning.
- Learning environments are intentionally designed to be welcoming, engaging, and student-centered.
Effective Teaching in Every Classroom
- All teachers participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) focused on reflection, data analysis, and instructional improvement.
- Instruction is guided by a shared instructional model that strengthens coherence and tells a unified “story of learning” across the school.
- New teachers receive structured support to align quickly with Nicolas’ instructional expectations.
Data-Informed Instruction
- We use both leading indicators (instructional practices, student engagement, learning walk data) and lagging indicators (achievement and growth data) to guide decisions.
- Learning walks are used not for evaluation, but for collective learning, helping staff identify patterns and refine practice.
- Student voice and “street data” are incorporated to ensure learning reflects student experiences and needs.
Rigorous and Accessible Coursework
- Nicolas offers Honors courses in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
- Students have access to advanced mathematics, including Algebra and Geometry.
- College credit opportunities are available through Advanced Placement Computer Science.
- A 1:1 iPad program ensures equitable access to technology and digital learning tools.

Programs That Bring Learning to Life
At Nicolas Junior High School, learning extends beyond the classroom through a wide range of intentional academic and enrichment programs designed to engage students, build skills, and foster a sense of belonging.
Students participate in hands-on STEM experiences through Design & Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, and our Spyder Lab, where problem-solving, creativity, and real-world application are central to learning. These programs allow students to apply academic concepts in meaningful ways while developing collaboration and critical-thinking skills.
To support college and career readiness, AVID provides structured academic support, goal-setting, and organizational strategies that empower students to take ownership of their learning and envision their future success.
The arts play a vital role in student engagement and school culture. Through Performing Arts, including Dance and Music, as well as our culturally responsive Mariachi and Folklórico programs, students develop confidence, discipline, and self-expression while celebrating identity and community.
Together, these programs are intentionally aligned with our instructional focus, ensuring that students experience learning that is rigorous, relevant, engaging, and connected to their lives.
